On Tuesday, February 16, collaborator Rose Ramirez and I are giving a photo presentation and lecture at a meeting of the San Diego Chapter of the California Native Plant Society titled Edible, Medicinal, Material, Ceremonial: Contemporary Ethnobotany of Southern California Indians. The image above, from a workshop in Tecate, shows chia seeds being roasted over an open fire before being ground into a fine meal, then added to water for a nutritious drink. Anthropologist Mike Wilken will be writing about the workshop in the next issue of News from Native California.

Many of the images and information from our California Native Plant Society presentation are a part of our 2010 Ethnobotanical Calendar.
