I took this photo of Teodora Cuero when she was gathering live oak and scrub oak acorns in North County San Diego. Teodora is a revered Kumiai plant specialist, 87 years old. She’s also the traditional authority of her village, La Huerta, in Baja. She and Leonor Farlow, a Kiliwa elder and plant and language specialist, visited for 5 wonderful days. Leonor is one of four remaining fluent speakers of the Kiliwa language. She is working hard to preserve the Kiliwa language.
