Wild peony / Paeonia californica

wild peony

Lydia Vassar found a field of wild peonies on the way up to Palomar Mountain, and this morning she took me there to photograph them. The area had burned in the 2007 fires, and these native California peonies, which are fairly rare in the wild, were everywhere. Thank you, Lydia.

The peony flowers nod downward, so it’s necessary to sit or lie down on the ground to photograph them.
